Now that the dust has finally settled, it’s time to look back on the week that was, Fleadh Choeil 2019! Drogheda hosted a record number of over 700,000 people at the Fleadh & one that I’ll never forget. For me, it truly was one of the busiest yet exciting weeks that I ever had in work. We had so much content right on LMFM’s doorstep!

This year’s official launch saw President Michael D Higgins address thousands at Boltan Square on the Gig Rig stage. President Higgins is a regular visitor, as well as Patron, to the festival and I was honoured to get a few words with him to kick start the LMFM coverage for the week of the Fleadh. I spoke to so many people from all walks of life about their highlights from the Festival. My highlights were definitely interviewing the President & meeting so many of you on the streets of Drogheda. I absolutely loved creating videos & showcasing the North East’s finest across social media.

If you misses the interviews, you can find a sample of them below. I loved interviewing people from the crowds who were visiting, taking part or just enjoying the music and all that Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann had to offer. Here’s one video where I spoke to people from Ireland, the US, Croatia, & a member of the The Healy’s band who were home from Perth for the occasion!

In his speech, he stressed the importance of Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in spreading Irish music and culture throughout the world. I captured a snippet below & shared his cúpla focal across LMFM’s social media.

Visitors enjoyed a wealth of music from performers such as Damien Dempsey, the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, Zoe Conway, Nathan Carter, the Hothouse Flowers and many more, as well as music and dance along the streets throughout the week.

What was your most memorable moment during the week? In 2020 the Fleadh will be held in Mullingar, Westmeath, where they will host the 70th Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann”
